Senior Trophy
With the end of school approaching, thoughts are not only about yearbooks and testing. It's also time to think about sports banquets and trophies. Here is an idea for a Senior or Graduating Athlete, especially if the player has been invovled with the team long term. This is a swimmers plaque for a summer league swim team. The parents were contacted and all the keepsakes from years gone by were collected and striped of the name plates. All star pins were also turned over to the committee. You can see by the photo that the engraver did a fabulous job of putting everything together!

Design on Word
This locker sign was designed on a word program, printed and the extras were added! Anna's name is glued on to a background and then stampped! Then attached to the top. At the bottom, the 3-D swirl is made with Beads! So- creative! Thanks again Diane!
Its Tennis Season
It is Tennis Season so many of the samples coming in are for that sport! Don't worry about your handwriting, you don't have to be an artist or a scrapbooker, just have some fun with construction paper, clipart and markers! If you can find stuff that you like on the web. . .try making photocopies of your yearbook pages from last year! Plenty of mascots and plenty of photos to "steal"!

Mascot Meaning
mas·cot (mās'kŏt', -kət) n.
A person, animal, or object believed to bring good luck, especially one kept as the symbol of an organization such as a sports team. [French mascotte, sorcerer's charm, mascot, from Provençal mascoto, sorcery, fetish, from masco, witch, ultimately from Medieval Latin masca, mask, specter, witch.] a person or animal that is adopted by a team or other group as a symbolic figure
Word History:
A giant strutting bird leading a cheer at the homecoming game may seem a far cry from a witch fashioning a charm or spell, but these two figures are related historically in the development of the word mascot. Mascot came into English as a borrowing of the French word mascotte, meaning "mascot, charm." The English word is first recorded in 1881 shortly after the French word, itself first recorded in 1867, was popularized by the opera La Mascotte, performed in December 1880. The French word in turn came from the Provençal word mascoto, "piece of witchcraft, charm, amulet," a feminine diminutive of masco, "witch." This word can probably be traced back to Medieval Latin masca, "witch, specter." Thus for all their apparent differences, yesterday's witches and today's cuddly mascots can be seen in the same light, as agents working their respective magic to bring about a desired outcome., witch.]

Apply Alliteration
alliteration [(uh-lit-uh-ray-shuhn)]
The repetition of the beginning sounds of words, as in “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,” “long-lived,” “short shrift,” and “the fickle finger of fate.”
What more is there to say?
Oh, . . .How about repeating the design multiple times? A stencil would be useful, but a pattern would also work. A pattern is easier to make. Just draw the mallet out on a poster board and then cut around the design. Then place the pattern on the mallot colored paper and trace around the edge to recreate the shape. Outline with markers to finish. A bit of glitter would be nice to express the pieces flying!
Don't forget the Onomatopoeia!

Don't Forget the Coach!
When the locker decorations are being created, whether it's assembly line or by individual volunteers, don't forget to add the coaches to the count! Post his(or her) lucky charm to the door of their room!
Spread the Spirit!
It is also fun to make charicatures of the coach! A caricature is a portrait that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person to create an easily identifiable visual likeness, using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others. It would make a great contest during the match or other event for the players who weren't busy. Use clipart websites , clipart program or old magazines to make pages of eyes, noses, mouths etc. . . Provide students with paper, scissors, and glue sticks to create coach portraits! Great for the yearbook or end of season banquet! Or Just make them into Locker Spirit Art for the next game ... "Don't Forget Coach says. . ."
This caricature was found in a Walter T. Foster book.

The Bird Cliche
Here are a few Bird cliches that might help with spirit verses to ward off the opponent! :
Naked as a jaybird, Little bird told me, Kill two birds with one stone, Free as a bird, For the birds, The early bird catches the worm, Catbird seat, Are you Chicken?, Birds of a feather -flock together, Bird's-eye view, A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, A wet bird never flies at night, Eat Crow, Looks like a black cat with a red bird in its mouth, The Birds and The Bees, Flit around like a little bird, Get out of our nest, Etc. . .

Target the Mascot
Aggression tword the opponent's mascot is the most fun way to get player's attention in a long endless hall of lockers. With the Mega High Schools these days. . .it is hard to make a statement, so go for the attack!
This duck is simple and really states the intention, but this could be used for any "foul" talisman. Don't hesitate to call this bird a Blue Jay, Eagle, Falcon, Hawk, Penguin, Parrot, Owl, Roadrunner, Rooster or Woodpecker! Instead of coloring it yellow and orange, use that school's colors! Plus, ---change the beak to fit that team's bird. You're ready to FLY!

Make Your Own Spirit Clipart
Start by finding clipart that you like, ...or ask a creative friend to doodle the sports equipment for the team. Use a copy machine or scan to repeat the designs. Make a page of designs for each of the locker committee members. Feel free to right clip on this pic and save it to your computer. It will be easy for you to print out from there! Hope this helps!

Now that it is the new year, we are already looking forward to Spring Break, Graduation and then summer. The days left at school before this time, just flys by and being ready for parties, banquets and booster events takes quiet a bit of organization. Here is a tie-on favor used for a band end of season dinner that was attached to a rose for senior moms. Be Good to your Volunteers too!
